The global food sector (from retailer to farmer producer) is under increasing pressure from interested consumers to prove its sustainability credentials.
The production of red meat, and beef in particular, needs to respond to this call for transparency around farming, production and retail practices.
Resilient sectors adapt to changing market demands and changing community expectations through strategic, collaborative and co-ordinated action.
While there is currently significant activity in this space in the New Zealand beef value chain, including; activity carried out by B+LNZ, MIA, the New Zealand National Farm Assurance Programme, individual company quality assurance programmes, Land and Environment plans, and government regulatory requirements, they are not always easily transparent to consumers and customers for New Zealand beef.
The aim of the New Zealand Roundtable is to ensure New Zealand’s beef is continually produced in a sustainable way, and in-line with consumers’ expectations, through identifying material sustainability issues and promoting good practice through the supply chain. We trust this will ultimately lead to a greater understanding of New Zealand’s beef production systems by our community stakeholders and consumers.
In serving its purpose, the New Zealand Roundtable for Sustainable Beef will assist in positioning New Zealand beef as a leading food that is not only safe, but is also produced in a manner that is environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable.
